Pack proper hiking boots, windproof jacket and snacks. No facilities at the trailhead.
Park at the official car park. Follow marked trail — do NOT leave the path on fresh lava.
4 km each way across dramatic lava fields. The 2023 eruption cone is visible — still steaming in parts.
Drive to the harbour town for hot fish soup and bread. Refuel before the afternoon.
Colourful mineral fields — completely different from the black lava landscape. Excellent photo stop.

Public transport to most Reykjanes attractions is limited. A rental car gives you freedom to explore at your own pace.
Check Volcanic Access
Eruption site access can close with little warning. Always check safetravel.is before heading to Fagradalsfjall or Grindavík.
Morning Start
Geothermal areas and coastal trails are far less crowded before 10:00. Early starts also give the best photographic light.
Combine with Capital Region
Reykjanes and Reykjavík can be combined in a 2–3 day trip. The two regions complement each other perfectly.
