Skálholt fue fundado como obispado en 1056 y siguió siendo una de las dos sedes episcopales de Islandia hasta 1785. Fue el centro religioso y educativo más importante del país durante la Edad Media, con una catedral, una escuela y un scriptorium. El sitio cayó en decadencia después de que la sede del obispo se mudó a Reykjavík, pero en la década de 1960 se construyó una nueva catedral para honrar la historia del sitio.
