One Day South Coast Drive
Waterfalls, black sand beach and the iconic South Coast in a single day
Head east on Route 1. Stop at Selfoss for coffee if needed.
Walk behind the curtain of water. Waterproof jacket essential. Allow 45 minutes.
200m from Seljalandsfoss — wade into the canyon. Almost nobody goes. 20 minutes.
Climb the 527 steps to the viewing platform. Rainbow in the morning mist. 1 hour.
Iceland's best folk museum. Pack lunch or café on site.
Sea stacks, basalt columns and black sand. STAY AWAY from the waterline — sneaker waves are deadly.
Iceland's southernmost town — coffee, petrol, browse Víkurprjón wool shop.
Dramatic basalt arch and puffin colony (May–Aug). Lighthouse viewpoint.
Arrives ~19:00. Route 1 back, straightforward.
Leave by 08:00 — this itinerary is very tight if you're late starting. Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are both best in morning light.
Two Days: South Coast + Glaciers
Full South Coast on day one, Jökulsárlón and glacier hike on day two
Both waterfalls in the morning before crowds arrive
Black sand beach + food and petrol in Vík
Serpentine canyon — 30 min walk, extraordinary views
Hotel or guesthouse — good base for day 2
Hexagonal basalt waterfall — 1.5 h hike return
Guided tour from Skaftafell — crampons and guide included. Book in advance.
Floating icebergs, boat tour optional. Allow 1.5 hours.
Ice chunks on black sand — spectacular photography at golden hour.
~3 hours drive. Arrive ~20:00.
The Glacier Lagoon is 375 km from Reykjavík — only do this as an overnight trip. Rushing it as a day trip ruins both the drive and the destination.
Winter: Ice Cave & Northern Lights
Blue ice cave inside Vatnajökull + aurora hunting in the dark South Coast
South Coast in winter gets dark early — start early to maximise light.
The waterfall partially freezes in January–February — extraordinary ice formations.
4 hours of daylight in December. The low sun creates all-day golden light.
Stay close to the lagoon for early morning light and ice cave access.

Guided tour inside Vatnajökull — blue ice at its most intense in winter. Book 4–6 weeks ahead.
Ice chunks most concentrated at low tide. Check tide times the day before.
Return via Route 1. Allow extra time for icy conditions.
December and January blue ice is the deepest, most photogenic. The Crystal Cave books out completely from Christmas to New Year — reserve immediately.
Family South Coast Adventure
Kid-friendly stops with waterfalls, puffins and a glacier lagoon boat ride
Children love walking behind the waterfall — bring wellies and waterproofs.
Old Icelandic farmhouses, turf buildings and a blacksmith — fascinating for older children.
Picnic at the base of the falls. Rainbow every clear morning.
Easy 30-min walk to the glacier tongue. Children can touch the ice. Under 8s free on most tours.
Puffin watching from Dyrhólaey (June–August). Ice cream in Vík.
Easy walking path along the canyon rim — spectacular views, completely safe.
Amphibious boat among the icebergs — children find it magical. Book in advance.
Let children collect small ice pieces on the black sand — completely safe away from the waterline.
Puffins at Dyrhólaey are visible June–August only. Outside this window, seagulls and fulmars are still present but puffins have migrated.
Photographer's Route — South Iceland
Golden hour waterfalls, black beach drama and glacier lagoon reflections
Walk behind the waterfall with first light filtering through. Completely empty. Long exposure for silky water.
Rainbow appears in the mist every clear morning from 09:00. Shoot from mid-height on the stairs.
Empty canyon waterfall 10 min from Skógar. Extreme dynamic range — bracket exposures.
Dramatic overcast light is perfect for black beach shots. Long exposure waves with sea stacks.
Serpentine river at golden hour. Telephoto for compressed canyon curves from the rim.
Icebergs in still water before sunrise. Shoot east — orange sky reflects in the lagoon.
Receding water reveals clear ice on black sand. Long exposure creates ice-streak patterns.
Hexagonal basalt columns — polariser essential to saturate the dark rock and white water.
South Iceland in summer: golden hour from 22:00–02:00. The midnight sun creates all-day usable light — shoot through the night and sleep in the afternoon.

Book glacier tours early
Popular glacier hikes and ice cave tours fill up weeks ahead in summer and winter. Book before you fly.
Fuel up before Vík
Petrol stations thin out east of Vík. Fill up in Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur before continuing east.
Reynisfjara safety
Do not approach the waterline. Sneaker waves have killed visitors. Stay at least 30m back from the ocean.
Allow more time than planned
Every stop takes longer than expected. Add 20% extra time to any South Coast itinerary.
Overnight in Vík or Klaustur
Break the South Coast into 2 days. The drive from Reykjavík to Jökulsárlón and back in one day is exhausting.

For glaciers and ice caves, guided tours provide transport, safety equipment and expert knowledge.
