Dynjandi steypist í þrepum yfir norðlægan fjörð, stærstu fuglabjörg Evrópu í Látrabjargi, rauð sandfjara, refir og vegir svo afskekktir að þeir virðast við enda veraldar.

01Introduction

03When to Go

The Best Time to Visit Westfjords

04Location & Access

Getting to & Around Westfjords

(...) Hjónin Claudia og Matthias frá Þýskalandi festu kaup á húsinu fyrir nokkrum árum og eru að gera það upp“ (1). Síðasta galdrabrennan á Íslandi fór fram árið 1683 við Arngerðareyri í Ísafjarðardjúpi (2).

12Know Before You Go

Westfjords Travel Tips

Local know-how to keep your trip smooth and safe.

⚠️

Gravel roads

Many Westfjords roads are gravel or single-lane. Safe speed is 40–60 km/h; know where your spare tyre is before you leave.

⛵

Baldur ferry

The Stykkishólmur–Brjánslækur ferry cuts 4–6 hours off the drive. It fills fast with campervans in summer — book weeks ahead.

🐦

Látrabjarg

Europe's largest bird cliffs — puffins so tame they pose within a metre. Stay back from the crumbling cliff edge.

⛽

Fuel

Stations are sparse. Never pass one without topping up — Dynjandi has no fuel; nearest is Flókalundur or Patreksfjörður.

✈️

Fly instead

Eagle Air flies Reykjavík–Ísafjörður in 45 minutes if time is tight, then rent a car locally.

❄️

Season

Most services open June–August only. Winter access is extremely limited by road conditions — don't attempt it casually.

13FAQ

Westfjords Travel FAQ

10 of the most common questions, answered.

Are the Westfjords worth the long drive?

+

If you value remoteness, dramatic landscapes and wildlife without crowds — absolutely. It's Iceland's least-visited region, and Dynjandi, Látrabjarg and Rauðisandur are world-class. Set aside 3+ days.

What is Dynjandi and is it hard to reach?

+

A tiered 'wedding-cake' waterfall on Arnarfjörður, 100 m wide at the top. The road (Route 60) is paved to the car park, then a 15-minute walk up — easy and accessible.

When is the best time to visit the Westfjords?

+

June to August, when roads are passable, services open and Látrabjarg is packed with nesting puffins. Winter access is extremely limited.

Can you camp in the Westfjords?

+

Yes — registered campsites in Ísafjörður, Patreksfjörður, Flókalundur and near Dynjandi. It's one of Iceland's best regions for responsible wild camping.

How do I get to Hornstrandir?

+

By boat from Ísafjörður, June–August only — there are no roads. Most visitors hike 2–7 days and must be fully self-sufficient.

What wildlife can I see in the Westfjords?

+

Puffins and razorbills at Látrabjarg, arctic foxes (wild in Hornstrandir, or at the Arctic Fox Centre in Súðavík), seals and occasional whales in the fjords.

Do I need a 4x4 for the Westfjords?

+

Not essential for the main paved routes, but a higher-clearance car is more comfortable on the many gravel roads, and a 4x4 helps for remote tracks like the road to Rauðisandur.

What is Rauðisandur?

+

Iceland's only red-sand beach — 10 km of rust-coloured sand from crushed scallop shells, remote and almost always empty.

How long should I spend in the Westfjords?

+

A minimum of three days; a week lets you reach Ísafjörður, Látrabjarg, Rauðisandur, Dynjandi and the Strandir coast without rushing.

Is there good food in the Westfjords?

+

Ísafjörður has genuinely excellent restaurants — Tjöruhúsið (a legendary fish restaurant) and Húsið. Stock up on groceries before heading into the remote fjords.
