Skógafoss's history is primarily geological, formed over thousands of years as the land retreated from the sea. The cliff from which it falls was once part of Iceland's coastline, with the waterfall marking the former sea cliffs. As the land lifted following the last ice age, the sea moved further away, leaving behind these dramatic inland cliffs. It is considered one of the country's largest and most beautiful waterfalls. Culturally, Skógafoss is steeped in local folklore. The most famous legend tells of Þrasi Þórólfsson, one of the first Viking settlers in the area, who reportedly hid a chest full of gold coins behind the waterfall. It is said that the chest remains there to this day, though many have tried and failed to retrieve it. A local boy is said to have found the chest and retrieved a ring from it, before it disappeared again. The waterfall has been a landmark and a source of wonder for centuries, providing both a natural barrier and a source of vital freshwater. Its enduring presence and captivating beauty have made it a cherished symbol of Icelandic wilderness and a magnet for travelers worldwide.

Skógafoss stands as one of Iceland's most iconic and powerful waterfalls, a magnificent testament to the island's dramatic natural beauty. Located on the Skógá River in South Iceland, near the village of Skógar, this impressive cascade plunges 60 meters (197 feet) over a cliff that once marked the coastline, before the land receded seaward. Flanked by incredibly green, moss-covered basalt cliffs, as clearly visible in the image, the waterfall's broad curtain of water creates a constant, ethereal mist at its base. On sunny days, this mist reliably produces single or even double rainbows, offering a spectacular photographic opportunity and a truly magical experience, as captured by the vivid arc seen near the base in the image. Visitors can walk right up to the base of the waterfall across the stony ground, feeling its thunderous power and the refreshing spray on their faces. For a different perspective, a steep but well-maintained staircase on the eastern side of the waterfall leads to an observation deck at the top. From here, you can gaze down upon the cascading water and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the river Skógá continuing its journey towards the sea, dotted with numerous smaller waterfalls further upstream. Be prepared for wet conditions if you venture close to the base, and wear appropriate waterproof clothing.
