01Introduction

The Highlands: Iceland's Uninhabited Heart

The Highlands are the vast, empty interior that most visitors only glimpse from the ring of the coast. No one lives here. There are no towns, no shops and no paved roads — only gravel F-roads, unbridged rivers, and some of the most otherworldly landscapes on the planet.

It is a place of superlatives: the rainbow rhyolite mountains and hot bathing river of Landmannalaugar; the green oasis of Þórsmörk cradled between three glaciers; the Askja caldera with its warm crater lake; and the endless black-sand deserts of Sprengisandur and Kjölur.

The Highlands open for only a short summer window and demand real preparation — a 4x4, river-crossing know-how and full self-sufficiency. Those without a suitable vehicle can still reach the highlights on Super Jeep and highland-bus day tours from Reykjavík and the south.

03When to Go

The Best Time to Visit Icelandic Highlands

The Highlands have essentially one season. F-roads open only once the snow clears and close again with the first autumn snows.

High Summer

Jul–early Sep

The core season — most F-roads open, mountain huts staffed and the Laugavegur trek in full swing. Exact dates vary yearly.

Early Summer

late Jun

The first routes (like the road to Landmannalaugar) begin to open, but many remain closed and rivers run high with meltwater.

Autumn

mid Sep–Oct

Roads start closing with early snows; access becomes unreliable and huts shut down.

Winter

Nov–May

The interior is closed to self-drivers. Access is only by organised Super Jeep or snowmobile tour.

04Location & Access

Getting to & Around Icelandic Highlands

Every Highland route is an F-road, which by law requires a 4x4. If you don't have one — or the river-crossing experience — take a tour or highland bus.

4x4 self-drive

Required for all F-roads. Study river crossings, never cross blind, and carry food, fuel and a paper map — there are no services inside.

Super Jeep tours

Guided day and multi-day tours from Reykjavík and the south reach Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk and Askja without you driving.

Highland buses

Scheduled summer buses (e.g. to Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk) let hikers reach the trailheads without a car.

Do I need a 4x4 for the Highlands?

+

Yes, by law. Every Highland route is an F-road, which requires a 4x4; driving them in a 2WD is illegal, uninsured and dangerous.

What is Landmannalaugar?

+

A geothermal area in the Fjallabak reserve famous for rhyolite mountains in reds, greens and yellows, a natural hot bathing river, and the start of the Laugavegur trek.

How do I get to the Highlands without a car?
